How long (and how in the world) did you manage to lose all that weight?

It took me a little over a year to lose ninety pounds- going from 240 pounds to 150 pounds by following the induction level of the Atkins diet.   After reaching goal, I stopped doing Atkins and attempted to eat a sensible diet most of the time.   I would have some gains and losses on and off for nearly seven years (the largest occurring during my pregnancy with our youngest daughter), but had managed to maintain most of the weight loss thanks to incorporating exercise into my routine.   I credit P90X for my loss of the “baby weight” after having Stella and TurboFire for really igniting my passion for fitness!  When I first started Insanity in September of last year, I weighed nearly 160.   I lost  thirty pounds to get me to my now weight of 130 thanks to Shakeology, a healthy & well-balanced diet and a consistent exercise routine.   Since finishing Insanity, I’ve also done Les Mills PUMP, Insanity:The Asylum,  Ultimate Reset , 21 Day Fix, Body Beast, Focus T25.  I’m currently doing PiYo!  Thanks to Beachbody, I am in the absolute BEST shape of my life. What’s the best diet for weight loss?

I’d be hard pressed to name a singular “best” diet for everyone.  What I would say is avoid ANY DIET that requires starvation and try to pick a diet plan that you can stick with for LIFE.  As a weight loss success story, I can tell you it’s harder to maintain your goal weight than it is to get there.   Unfortunately, once you reach your goal, your goal weight will not magically stick- you have to work to maintain it by continuing to eat sensibly & keep active.   This is why it’s so important to find a program with a nutrition plan that you can live with for many, many years.  Check out my guide to Eating Smart for more nutrition tips.  One of the things I love the most about Beachbody workout programs is their inclusion of an easy-to-follow nutrition guide.  You CANNOT get that with a gym membership.  Better still, is the Team Beachbody Club Membership option which provides you with detailed meal plans and recipes based upon your workout program’s nutrition guidelines- you can even print out grocery lists based on your week’s meal plan!  How simple is that?  Oh, and you also get a 10% discount on all Beachbody products as a Club Member.  Sweet!

Do you know of any good diet pills?

No.  If you’ll read the labels of most diet pills, take note as most include a disclaimer to the effect “when used in conjunction with diet and exercise.”  My bet is that you’d have the same or better results even if you just changed your diet  and devoted at least 20 minutes of your day to exercise.  Save your money and use it to invest in healthy, whole foods or a nice pair of sneakers.  You’ll be doing your body good if you simply opt for a healthy diet and exercise and skip the diet pills.  There is no magic pill for weight loss.   Check out the ingredients list and warnings on most diet pills- they are downright scary!

Isn’t P90X just a gimmick?

Why? Because they have no “skin in the game.”  When you’ve invested in something, you’re more likely to work towards building that investment. What’s your favorite way to make a Shakeology?

What does it mean to “eat clean”?

In a nutshell, eating clean is the practice of eating whole, natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. It also means staying away from the junk that typically makes up the Standard American Diet (S.A.D) These types of food include man-made sugar, bad fats (hydrogenated, trans-fat), preservatives, white bread, and any other ingredients that are unnecessary. An easy way to remember if a food is clean is: “if man made it, don’t eat it.”

How much time do you spend working out each day?

It depends on the workout program I’m doing and what’s on the schedule each day.  Typically, I spend anywhere from 20-60 minutes working out.  There are some rest days in the mix and other times I may spend 90-120 minutes exercising (most likely due to a run scheduled for 5K or half-marathon training).  I pick workout programs that I find challenging AND enjoyable.

I’m only eating 900 calories a day and I’m still not losing any weight? Why?

I’m guessing it’s because you’re not eating enough. It AMAZES me when I receive PMs or messages such as these.  Your body NEEDS food to function.  Generally speaking, anything below 1200 is too low.  If you’re not giving your body enough fuel in the form of food, you’re body will go into starvation mode.  Click here for my tips on eating healthy- which includes a section on how to determine your ideal caloric intake.

I’m kind of interested in becoming a Beachbody Coach but I’m not yet in great shape.  Shouldn’t I wait until get in really great shape to sign up as a Coach?

When I started as a Beachbody Coach, my body fat percentage was nearly in the overweight range.   I weighed 158 pounds- my weight and bodyfat % has significantly changed WHILE coaching.  I’ve lost 30 pounds and am now snugly in the healthy weight range.   Coaching has actually helped motivate me to push harder and eat smarter than I probably would have had I simply done Beachbody programs as a customer rather than a Coach.

Does Beachbody Coaching take up a lot of time?

You can spend as little or as much time on your business as you like- that’s the beauty of it. There are no sales quotas you have to hit.  It is truly YOUR business.  You decide how much time you’ll devote to it. You’re the boss!

Isn’t Beachbody Coaching a (cue ominous music) pyramid scheme?

When people ask that, they typically don’t even know what a Pyramid Scheme is. First, a true pyramid scheme is 100% illegal. A pyramid scheme is where a “distributor” gets paid JUST to bring in new distributors and there is no product being exchanged. So if I got paid just to bring on new Coaches (and there was no physical product exchanged), then that would indeed be a pyramid scheme and would be illegal. As a Beachbody Coach you don’t get paid just for bringing on new Coaches to your team. You only get paid for bringing on new Coaches if that Coach buys or sells product. You get rewarded when that Coach is actually doing something and working to help others and grow their business.
